The Foundation for Advances in Medicine and Science (FAMS) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of medicine and science worldwide. It gathers and disseminates medical and scientific information via publications, symposia, and the distribution of research findings. Its programs are divided into two sections — the Section on Medicine and the Section on Science. This profile outlines the activities and goals of the Section on Medicine.
FAMS will review your patient education materials with emphasis on readability analyses, literacy guidelines, and literacy level testing. FAMS also publishes books on subjects ranging from positron emission tomography to the history of cardiology.
New symposia that will be directed toward health professionals such as administrators, nurses, and caregivers (in the area of interpreting patient education materials) are planned. Existing materials need to be evaluated for their suitability for use by those who speak English as a second language. One of FAMS’ high priorities is to help secure funding for studies to scientifically analyze the readability of patient materials emanating from a variety of sources.
Additional projects forming a major part of FAMS’ future plans include the establishment of a model distribution system to make information concerning readability analysis available to those producing and distributing educational materials for the patient and/or the general public.
FAMS is a certified 50l(c) (3) organization. All membership contributions are tax deductible. Membership in FAMS includes the following benefits:
